Tentative maps come out for redistricting; Cornelius could be split in 2; hearings tomorrow

Mecklenburg is on the bottom left

Oct. 25. By Dave Vieser. GOP-drawn redistricting maps released thus far could split Cornelius in half, placing much of the town in Republican Vicki Sawyer’s district rather than Natasha Marcus, the Democrat who represents Senate District 41.

Sawyer represents NC Senate District 34, which covers southern Iredell County as well as Yadkin County.

The maps will ultimately be used for elections starting in 2022.

Per state law, the legislature, dominated by Republicans, has sole approval authority while Gov. Cooper does not have veto power.

But based on previous redistricting years, legal action against the maps is possible.
