Dips in the road: Sign vandals hit The Peninsula

June 12. The Cornelius Police Department has been growing its network of video surveillance cameras. In fact, there are more than five dozen cameras around town, with more on the way. But that’s apparently not enough to capture vandals in the act in The Peninsula.

Vandals on the prowl have damaged and in some cases outright stolen distinctive verdigris street signs in the Double Eagle and Peninsula Shores areas of the community, as well as Jetton Road near Peninsula Club Drive and Belle Isle Drive near Mollypop.

They will be replaced, but homeowners and the property management company say it’s expensive.

“There may be additional items we have not yet found,” said Sam Hicks, head of Hawthorn Management, which maintains and manages The Peninsula. “The community keeps a few spare parts on hand for these type of events, but the custom replacements will take some time to order and be installed,” he said.

There are cameras mounted on poles near Jetton Park, and a license plate reader is on the way.

If you see vandalism, call the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773.
