Northern Regional Rec Center could open in April

Northern Regional Recreation Center

Feb. 2. The Northern Regional Recreation Center is on-boarding staff and will open in April with 16 full-time and more than 80 part-time employees.

The 85,000 square-foot center itself will have an indoor track, gyms, exercise equipment, swimming pools and a greenhouse.

It’s part fitness center, part community center, said Mecklenburg County Commissioner Elaine Powell, the North Meck representative on the county board.

The $40 million project is part of a $250 million parks and recreation bond package approved by voters in 2008. The county purchased the property in 2013 and added acreage before construction began in 2020.

Access for everyone

Powell said community building and providing access for everyone are central to what Parks and Recreation does. “There is a place for everyone and everyone is welcome,” she said, explaining that social equity and health and wellness go hand-in-hand.
