Major storm system under way

Jan. 16. As of 8 am about an inch and a half of snow has fallen in Cornelius and precipitation is changing to sleet, then freezing rain mid-morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s high will only reach 31 with windy conditions and daytime ice accumulation of 0.2 to 0.4 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

—At 9:30 am there appeared to be no power outages in the Duke Energy system here in North Meck. Duke expects 750K customers in the Carolinas to lose power. —Beware fallen power lines. Do *not eat yellow snow.

— This evening: Chance of snow and freezing rain before 7, then a chance of snow between 7 and midnight. Low around 29, winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Little or no snow accumulation expected

—UPDATED: Publix and both Harris Teeters in Cornelius are open, including pharmacies. At 10:30 am we got recordings at CVS at Jetton Village and Walgreen’s on Bethel at W. Catawba. BOTH ARE CLOSED.

—UPDATED: Cashion’s downtown and Cashion’s at Hwy. 21 and Catawba say they are closing at 4 pm.
