By Ryan Moxon — The Hough boys wrestling team posted two victories Tuesday night to win the 8A team wrestling state championship.
The match concluded a postseason that included scheduling issues because of winter storms, resulting in both the state semifinals and finals being held the same night at Northwest Guilford High School.
In the semifinals, Hough avenged a regular-season loss to Northwest Guilford with a 32-29 victory, clinching the match on a win by Amiri Mingo to advance to the state championship round.
In the final, Hough overcame a slow start to dominate Millbrook 45-20 to finish the season 31-5 and capture the school’s second state wrestling title. The first came in 2020.
“Every season is special in its own way but it’s nice when you get to cap off what you’ve worked so hard for,” said head coach Tripp Rogers, who will lead Hough in the individual state championship matches this weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum. “We’re happy we won and we celebrated last night but when we woke up this morning it’s time to go back to work.”
Competing for individual titles are Michael Santoro (120 pounds), Brandon Lefler (120), Adrian Feliciano (126), Cody Bui (144), Tyton Kostoff (150), Vincent Grack (157), Amiri Mingo (175), Quinn Schiano (190), Joey Ricci (214) and Nathan Mitchell (285).
