Hough High hosts state choir competition

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities and William Peace University will hold the State Finals of Show Choir Competition at Hough High Saturday April 29.

The high school division will begin at 10 am.

The high schools will perform in order:
Hillside High School of Durham, Lake Norman High School, Kings Mountain High School, Grimsley High School of Greensboro, West Brunswick High School, Overhills High School of Spring Lake, EE Smith High School of Fayetteville and then Cornelius’ own Hough High.

The high school awards ceremony is scheduled for 2 pm.

Hickory Ridge Middle School of Harrisburg will kick off the middle school division at 3:45 pm, followed by Hanes Magnet Middle School of Winston-Salem, 71st Classical Middle School of Fayetteville, Harris Road Middle School of Concord, West Pine Middle School of Pinehurst, Randolph Middle School of Charlotte, Jay M Robinson Middle School of Charlotte and Central Middle School of Gatesville.

The middle school awards ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

In addition to recognizing the top three choirs with medals and trophies, the judges will also recognize individuals and groups for best vocals, choreography, new choir, show design, male and female solo, male and female stage presence, and a Director’s Award.

All choirs qualified for the State Finals by competing in one of four Regionals statewide. Winners of each Regional advanced along with additional choirs until the top 8 were advanced to the State Finals.

The event is open to the public, admission is $10 for everyone age 12 and over. Tickets are available at the door.

Show Choir is one of 23 competitions that will determine the best high school and middle school in the state. The NCASA Scholastic Cup and NCSSM Challenge Cup will be awarded to the high schools and middle schools with the best overall performance among the 23 major scholastic competitions in North Carolina. Points are awarded for participation and excellence in NCASA and partner competitions.
