Head of airport, a Cornelius resident, receives award

July 18. Cornelius resident Haley Gentry was recently recognized for her career achievements by Appalachian State University’s Alumni Association. Gentry has served as the CEO of Charlotte Douglas International Airport since 2021, becoming the first woman to lead the airport.

The annual Alumni Awards Gala recognizes graduates who have made a lasting impact on society through their professional, philanthropic and volunteer accomplishments. as well as their accomplishments in their respective fields.

“As we celebrate and honor these extraordinary alumni, we also thank them for their incredible contributions to both Appalachian State University and society,” said App State Chancellor Heather Norris. “These exemplary individuals serve as shining examples to our past, present and future students — who continue to build on their legacy.”

The Charlotte airport has become one of the busiest airports in the world. It ranks among the top airports globally for both aircraft operations and passenger volume. In 2024, the airport was the sixth busiest airport in the world for aircraft movements and seventh busiest for passenger volume.
