Decorated fall season for local athletes

Jan. 13 – By Ryan Moxon. As we turn the page on the semester, nine Hough High School athletes received all-state honors this fall, highlighted by cornerback Samari Matthews being named Mr. Football, an award given to the top player in the state.

In football, first-team all-state selections included Ethan Royal, Jarvis Potts and Matthews. Second-team honorees were Jamarion Morrison, Jayden White, Amaree Lawrence-Broom, Jackson Heath and Sincere Brewster.

In men’s soccer, Dylan Cox was named to the all-state team.

All Conference

The following Hough athletes were named all-conference this fall in the Greater Charlotte Athletic Conference:

Women’s golf: Reagan Sokol, Avery Gordish, Addison Chaffin and Emma Nostrom. Jim Haughey was named coach of the year.

Women’s tennis: Devin Gilroy (co–player of the year), Savannah Davis, Alara Cankurtaran, Lillian Bracksieck and Chloe Ketner.

Women’s volleyball: Sterling Schmidt, Riley Lewis, Anna Roth and Joi Tinsley.

Women’s cross country: Aleksa Camodeca, Sophia Hoogsten and Jul Mills-Zacapa.

Men’s cross country: Aidan Malloy, Grant Collum and Jack Bennett.

Men’s soccer: Dylan Cox, Lukas Patrignani, Piercon Selland and Santiago Giraldo.

Football: 15 all-conference players. DeShawn Baker was named co–head coach of the year, LJ Porter was named defensive specialist of the year, Matthews was named defensive player of the year, and Royal was named offensive player of the year.
