Cornelius man arrested on child exploitation charges

Aug. 6. A Cornelius man was arrested after surrendering to police on Wednesday on 10 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

Elias Daniel Mongelos-Frutos, 24, was being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on a $75,000 bond. He was released early this morning, according to the county’s online database of arrest and inmate records.

On July 17, Cornelius police detectives executed a search warrant at 17105 Kenton Drive in connection with a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding suspicious internet activity.

During the search, detectives seized electronic devices from the residence that they said contained child sexual abuse material. No further details were released.

“The Cornelius Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the children not only in our community, but also children who suffer this type of violence,” the department said in a news release.

The cyber tip and subsequent arrest underscore the importance of third-party involvement in exposing threats to children. Concerned citizens can submit anonymous tips through North Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867 or on their website, or contact the Cornelius Police Department at 704-892-7773.
