Cell tower vote: How will it go?

Jan. 4. By Dave Vieser. The Cornelius Town Board is expected to render a decision tonight on a proposed 199-foot cell phone tower near the Lake Norman Cove neighborhood just off Jetton Road.

The request has generated a significant amount of opposition among residents, as well as Town Commissioner Jim Duke. “For the record, I am solidly opposed to this tower at this location,” Duke said. “Surely there are other less intrusive locations.”

Petition in opposition

Duke said he will present a petition with more than 150 signatures opposing the cell tower. He also said homeowner associations oppose the tower.

Despite the opposition, Town Manager Andrew Grant has recommended approval, declaring that the proposal from PeakNet is consistent with the Town’s Land Use Plan and reasonable in the public’s interest.

The tower would replace a smaller tower adjacent to the Lake Norman Cove at Jetton neighborhood near Jetton Park.

Meeting at 6

The meeting, which begins at 6 pm, will be held at Town Hall. Residents may view the meeting by accessing the town’s web site at www.cornelius.org and connecting to the link “watch meetings online.”
