Big Day at the Lake adjusts event due to algae bloom

June 26. With an abundance of caution and a steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of the children and boat hosts, organizers of Big Day at the Lake have made the difficult decision to cancel the boating portion of this year’s event due to the algae bloom situation on Lake Norman.

While this change may come as a disappointment to some, the spirit of the event remains strong. The much-anticipated picnic celebration will continue as scheduled—now with a slightly earlier time from noon to 2 pm July 19.

“While we’re sad to miss the time on the water, the safety of the kids is always our top priority,” said Big Day at the Lake founder Dave Yochum. “We’re excited to still come together for the annual picnic filled with food, games and community.”

Big Day at the Lake continues to support and celebrate the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas, providing young people from under-resourced communities with life-changing mentorship experiences and lasting memories.

Thanks to generous supporters, Big Day at the Lake has raised nearly $2 million for the agency over the past 21 years.

Boat Hosts and volunteers are encouraged to attend the picnic, which will include lunch, activities and plenty of fun.
