Rabid Fox Confirmed Near Cornelius
The Town of Davidson and Mecklenburg County announced containment of a rabid fox this week on Mayes Road, which runs through Cornelius and Davidson, as well as areas of unincorporated Mecklenburg County.
In a statement, the town said there were two confirmed human exposures and one confirmed pet exposure. The pet was current on its rabies vaccination.
The county provided the following tips for dealing with wild animals that may be infected with rabies:
- Never approach, touch or feed a wild animal, even if you think it is friendly or needs medical attention.
- Talk to children about the importance of not touching wildlife. Let them know that if they do touch or interact with wildlife, they should tell an adult. Emphasize that they will not get in trouble. If children think they will get in trouble, they may be too afraid to report a potential exposure.
- Make sure pets are current on their rabies vaccinations.
- Do not leave unvaccinated puppies and kittens outdoors unsupervised.
- Report stray animals and wild animals that appear sick or are acting abnormally to Animal Care and Control by calling 311.
If you think you or your pet has been bitten by a fox, contact Mecklenburg County Public Health. Residents can also sign up for county alerts about potential rabies exposures through CharMeck Alert.
