Fire Hydrant Testing is Underway

Published On: April 16, 2026

Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue has begun its annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance, which will continue over the coming weeks.

The department said the testing is important to ensure hydrants are operating correctly by providing adequate water flow in the event of an emergency.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this important work to keep our community safe and maintain high fire protection standards,” stated the department, adding that the testing is an important step in maintaining insurance ratings that impact homeowner insurance premiums.

Officials said residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure, as well as water discolored with rust or sediment.

“This is normal and typically short-lived,” stated the department. “If you experience discolored water, we recommend running cold water for a few minutes until it clears.”

Not every fire hydrant is tested annually. The town is divided into zones, and a sampling of different hydrants within those zones are tested each year.

Any questions or concerns should be directed to fire department officials at 704-892-1544.
