Two Hough wrestlers won state titles this past weekend at the NCHSAA North Carolina State Wrestling Championships. Hough also won the team title after winning the state Duals championship last week.
In the 106-pound weight class, Michael Santoro defeated Faysal Busisou of Athens Drive by decision. In the 144-pound weight class, Tyton Kostoff finished the season undefeated with a major decision over Vincent Valentino of Laney.
Hough sent 10 wrestlers to the individual state championship matches. Hough’s Brandon Lefler also reached the final but lost by decision to Mathew Adkins of Pinecrest in the 113-pound weight class. In the 190-pound weight class, Hough’s Joey Ricci lost by decision to Colton Bogan of Providence.
Boys basketball
The Hough boys basketball team won its first conference championship in school history on Friday night with a 54-48 victory over fourth-seeded South Mecklenburg.
The Huskies, the No. 2 seed, trailed by six points after the first quarter and stormed back with a 21-7 second quarter to take an eight-point lead into halftime. A strong defensive fourth quarter sealed the victory to win the Greater Charlotte 7A/8A Conference title.
In the state playoffs, the third-seeded Huskies have a first-round bye and will face the winner of No. 6 Chambers and No. 11 South Mecklenburg on Feb. 26.
Girls basketball
The Hough girls basketball team received the No. 9 seed in the state playoff bracket and will play No. 8 Pinecrest on Feb. 23.
