Hough football faces another strong test

Sept. 19. The New Bern Bears travel more than four hours west Friday night to face an undefeated Hough Huskies football team that is looking to clean up mistakes despite its perfect 4-0 record.

New Bern, 3-1, is coming off a 46-6 blowout loss to Cleveland. The Bears’ high-powered offense averaged 36 points through its first three games and will face a Hough defense that has anchored the team early this season.

The Bears’ passing attack is led by senior quarterback Terrance McCormick and senior wide receiver Kaishawn Taylor, who is averaging 106 receiving yards per game. The ground game has been balanced with junior Karvin Magwood averaging 101 rushing yards.

Hough has shown flashes of brilliance through its first four games. The offense is coming off a season-best 377 total all purpose yards in its last game against Mooresville.

The Huskies have been dominant in the defensive trenches, providing senior cornerback Samari Matthews and senior defensive back Micah Bright opportunities for turnovers at key moments in games.

In their final non-conference game of the regular season, Hough will look to build more consistency and try to avoid unforced errors. Penalty yardage has been an issue this season but the team has been able to overcome the mistakes to post four victories.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Hough. Tickets are $8.
