Sept. 6. By Ryan Moxon. Hough needed a turnover late in the fourth quarter against Highland Springs to seal the victory as the Huskies finished off the Virginia powerhouse on Friday night in Richmond to start the season 3-0.
Hough opened the scoring late in the first quarter on a field goal by senior kicker Piercion Selland to take a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter, senior quarterback Ethan Royal threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jayden White to make it 10-0.
A pass interference call late in the second quarter spotted the ball at the Huskies’ 33-yard line. Hough defensive back Jason Health intercepted a pass two plays later on the Huskies’ 10-yard line, but the offense then turned the ball over on a fumble at the Hough 1-yard line.
The Springers capitalized on the error, and the Huskies went into the locker room at halftime leading 10-7.
In the third quarter, Highland Springs took their first lead of the game when Royal threw a pick-six from the Hough 39-yard line.
The Huskies regained the lead, 17-14, late in the third quarter on another long touchdown pass from Royal to White.
The Hough defense continued the solid play that has anchored the Huskies through week three. The Springers, on their final possession that started near midfield, were sacked twice and turned the ball over on downs.
Penalties were a major factor in the game, as the Huskies were flagged nearly two dozen times while the home team was penalized only once.
This week, the Huskies will face Mooresville in their home opener at 7 p.m. at Hough High School. Look for more in Friday’s game preview.
