July 10. By Dave Yochum. Mayor Pro Tem Scott Higgins, the top vote-getter in the 2023 Town Board contest, will not seek re-election. A veteran of volunteer boards and commissions in Cornelius as well as a retired health professional and university senior administrator, he plans to focus on volunteer service.
Higgins has served as a member of the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Commission (now the Parks & Recreation Commission), as well as the Cornelius Housing Task Force, the Stakeholder’s Committee for the North Mecklenburg Recreation Center, the Pre-Development Planning Board and the Cornelius Housing Task Force.

The active 77-year-old, an accomplished cyclist, was also a member of the Cornelius Planning Board and chaired the PARC Commission from 2017 to 2022.

“After over a decade of engaged Town service and my role as a caretaker, it is time to refocus on other things of interest at this point in my life. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with my colleagues at Town Hall and community in enhancing the quality of life in Cornelius,” Higgins said.
As of 10:30 am today, four incumbent commissioners have filed to run for re-election. as well as two candidates for mayor—incumbent Woody Washam and challenger Denis Bilodeau.
Candidate filing for the municipal elections this fall opened Monday, July 7 and will run through Friday, July 18 at noon.
Hoping we can change his mind by filing deadline! Scott would have my endorsement to run again.
