Feb. 20. By Dave Vieser. The Cornelius Town Board approved spending $3 million on four different town projects. The money, from a one-time grant, must be used for capital improvements and equipment.

The funds will be allocated as follows:
—$1.2 million towards improvements at Bailey Road Park, including tennis and pickleball courts.
—$900,000 for resurfacing town maintained roadways.
—$500,000 to replace self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for the fire department.
—$400,000 towards the replacement of the playground at Legion Park.

Pursuant to the state grant, the funds must be spent by October of 2025.

With $3 million in previously budgeted funds now made available, the commissioners then agreed to apply $1 million towards the Smithville Infrastructure Improvement project. Decisions regarding use of the remaining $2 million will be made at a later date.

$1.2M for tennis and pickleball courts when there are the very same at the North Meck Rec Center down the street, open in all weather, that the town does not need to keep spending money on maintaining year after year.

You need to have a membership at North Meck. That place is jammed all the time. Having a healthy and active community and public parks is some of the best way to spend money.

I couldn’t agree more with Dianne’s comment. Money well spent.

There are no dedicated tennis or pickleball courts at the NMRC. You also need a membership to access the center. The town board is allocating money for the whole community and not just select individuals.

I’d be interested in which roads were being resurfaced. It’s not a lot of money for resurfacing, not sure if it’s worth the minimal investment.

Money would be better spent on roads. I don’t see how we can justify 1.2M for the entertainment of a select few who happen to enjoy a certain sport. Have them join or build a sports club with their own money!
