Cornelius resident will run for NC Treasurer

Ann Bradford with her son John Bradford met voters at Town Hall

April 20. By Dave Yochum. NC Rep. John Bradford, a Cornelius resident and former member of the Town Board, will run for North Carolina State Treasurer. The incumbent is Dale Folwell, who has announced plans to run for governor.

Bradford, a Republican representing NC District 98, said his experience as Senior Chairman of the NC House Finance Committee “will serve me well while overseeing the financial operations of North Carolina’s state government.”

Background

US Sen. Thom Tillis, also a former town commissioner, went on to be Speaker of the NC General Assembly and then the US Senate. NC 98 includes all of Cornelius as well as portions of Davidson.

Folwell has been state treasurer since 2017. He spent four terms in the House of Representatives, including a term as speaker pro tempore from 2011 to 2013.

Back in December, rival Christy Clark said she would run against Bradford for a fourth time this coming fall. In the 2022 rematch of their close 2020 race, Bradford won 17,925 votes vs Clark’s 17,064. It was similar to the outcome in 2020, but Clark won in 2018.

Meanwhile, Davidson resident Lisa Jewel, a Democrat, has also thrown her hat in the ring.
