What’s Delicious? This month we tell you about Pho Nam

John and Brian Tang

Nov. 21. Our good friend and food correspondent Cloyd Burke is always asking bartenders and servers around town WHAT’S DELICIOUS?

The fall air has arrived, and for me, that means a sprint to Pho Nam, a cozy Vietnamese restaurant run by John and his son, Brian, located in the strip mall near the entrance to Kings Point.

If you know, you know — and you’ve probably eaten the entire menu. If you don’t, start with the Pho Tai soup. It’s a large bowl of beef broth simmered for hours on the stove. The broth is poured over rice noodles and topped with slices of rare beef that cook instantly in the piping-hot liquid.

The bowl comes with thinly sliced onions, basil, sprouts and cilantro, creating the best darn soup these old taste buds have ever encountered. I like to toss in a little sriracha and hoisin toward the end to mix things up.

Next, move on to the Bun. I go for the spicy pork. Bun is served with room-temperature rice stick noodles and your choice of meat, topped with pickled daikon and other veggies I can’t identify but taste delicious. It comes with a yellow sauce I like to drizzle over the whole dish.

The Com Dia (broken rice) dishes are also great, though I’ve never been able to figure out what makes the rice “broken.” Looks intact to me.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time for John’s specialty items at the back of the menu. Spicy lemongrass chicken? Yes, yes, a hundred times yes. Cubed beef stir-fry? On point.

The pork clay pot is a salty, sugary, fatty masterpiece and the last stop on your Pho Nam journey — the final boss.

Portions are generous, but if you’re hungry for an appetizer, look no further than the crispy egg rolls. They’re unlike any egg roll you’ve ever had and, in my humble opinion, should be renamed “the crispiest egg rolls.”

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that John has the best orange soda in town. If you’re lucky, he’ll point to the cooler and say, “Grab a drink,” while running around delivering food.

Check it out sometime, and if you do, tell them ol’ Cloyd sent you.
