Second annual ‘Milling Around’
1-4 pm | Jan. 27. An outing to the ruins of the historic Torrance Mill featuring renowned mill historian Chuck Ketchie, traditional music and dance and more. Now nearly forgotten, the Torrance Mill built in 1824 by Hugh Torance was a centerpiece of the community for decades. Cornelius Walking Tour
1 pm | Jan. 28. Dig into the history of Cornelius with Gerard Thomas, community organizer, activist and advocate for education. Thomas has been passionate about the layers of history that today’s Cornelius was built upon. From the bricks of Davidson College to the old Mill of Cornelius to the cemetery of Mt Zion, Thomas has been there digging into the stories that have been buried, forgotten or lost. Gather at the Hut, Cornelius Presbyterian Church, 21209 Catawba Ave., Cornelius, to begin the local pilgrimage. Bring a lunch with you to the Gathering and hang around or go grab some lunch and come back.
1-3 pm | Jan. 28. Are you passionate about the environment and eager to contribute to research and conservation efforts? In partnership with Davidson College, Davison Lands Conservancy is looking for dedicated citizen scientists interested in collecting environmental data and conducting surveys in the West Branch of Rocky River. DLC recently launched this pilot initiative with a brief Zoom training. If you are interested in participating, email carly@davidsonlands.org and DLC can share the recording of that Zoom and then you can join DLC at Fisher Farm Park in Davidson for the in stream training.
