Cold rain or freezing rain?

Feb. 18. The National Weather Service says we’re in for rain or freezing rain, becoming all rain after 1 pm. Cornelius and Davidson appear to be on the edge of the rain/ice line, with freezing rain more of a sure thing to the north.

Our high will be around 35; north-northeast wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. If there is ice, an accumulation of 0.1 to 0.3 of an inch is possible.

Statewide

Especially north and west, residents should prepare for the possibility of power outages due to icing that will result in fallen trees and power lines.

Those areas could see a half inch of ice or more. Power outages can happen with as little as a quarter-inch of icing on trees and power lines.

Gov. Cooper will allow transportation waivers permitting utility companies to bring repair crews from out of state and get faster access to communities that have lost power. The governor also authorized the activation of 40 National Guard personnel to support fallen tree and debris removal.
