Unity in Community encourages residents to voice support for affordable housing

March 6. Unity in Community is urging residents to attend tonight’s Town Board meeting to show support for affordable housing in Cornelius.

During the meeting, a public hearing on the recommendations of the Land Use Task Force is scheduled.

Land use policies that limit density and building heights may make it difficult to impossible to build affordable housing, the group notes.

Unity in Community “is not opposed to the need to manage growth, however, it must not be done at the expense of affordable housing,” the group said in its request encouraging attendance at tonight’s meeting.

Smithville is exempt from the policy, but it may mean that very little to no other affordable housing will be built in Cornelius, according to Unity in Community.

Unity in Community is a multiracial, volunteer group of individuals committed to achieving racial equity in North Mecklenburg; the group is non-partisan.

The meeting is 6-8 pm at Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave.

Discussion

One Response to “Unity in Community encourages residents to voice support for affordable housing”

  1. I applaud Unity in Community for encouraging citizen input. The current town board has incorrectly been labeled as “no growth”. The approach has always been responsible growth under the guidance of a pragmatic and reasonable town plan. More importantly, there was a promise to finally listen to citizens and make decisions based on reasonable and thoughtful input, which is exactly what UIC is doing. Decisions about the future of our town are not difficult because citizens can/should/will provide the most valuable direction.
