Radar sign deployed in Robbins Park

Cornelius Public Works has deployed two new speed-feedback signs designed to encourage drivers to slow down.

The radar-equipped signs measure the speed of approaching vehicles and display it in real time. Drivers traveling over the posted speed limit are prompted with a flashing “Slow Down” message.

Public Works built custom solar-powered trailers for the signs, allowing them to fit within smaller rights of way without crowding the roadway.

The signs were initially deployed on Jetton Road Extension but will be moved every few weeks to other areas where speeding has been identified as a concern. Locations will include areas with frequent complaints, including:

  • No formal speed study has been requested by the surrounding community.
  • A formal speed study has been requested and is awaiting completion.
  • A formal speed study has been completed, but the study did not meet the criteria for traffic-calming actions.

In addition to displaying speeds, the signs collect traffic data that can help town staff identify patterns and determine where additional traffic-calming or enforcement efforts may be needed.
