Dec. 16. By Dave Vieser. Newly elected Cornelius Mayor Denis Bilodeau has promised to make transportation a central focus of his administration, and at the town board meeting on Monday night, commissioners unanimously approved the appointments of Robby Carney and Wayne Herron as Cornelius’ representatives on the Lake Norman Transportation Commission. The commission advocates at the state level for transportation needs in north Mecklenburg and south Iredell counties.
The appointments were among several approved last night to various advisory boards and committees. In addition to other committee assignments, Bilodeau will serve on the Metropolitan Transit Commission, which is the policy board for the Charlotte Area Transit System and has responsibility for reviewing and recommending all long-range public transportation plans.
In other action, the board approved a series of amendments to the town’s sign ordinance intended to:
• Clarify existing standards related to the number and illumination of building-mounted signs.
• Establish decision standards for administrative sign variances.
• Reduce the number of permitted sign illumination types along Catawba Avenue in Old Town Cornelius.
• Allow both wall and blade signs along Catawba Avenue in Old Town Cornelius.
• Create standards and additional allowances for temporary construction fence wraps.

All 7 of the Meck County municipal mayors by statute are voting members of MTC.
Also with the passing of the recent transit tax referendum brings to life the PAVE Act. As such MTC will soon be dissolved and replaced by the new Transit Authority. The New Transit Authority will be governed by a 27 member Board. Meck County and Charlotte control 18 of the 27 votes on this board.
Congratulation to Mr. Bob Menzel who will be Cornelius’ voting member on the new Transit Authority. A truly outstanding appointment by our Town Board!
