Oct. 21. By Dave Vieser. The town of Cornelius passed an ordinance last night that unregistered golf carts cannot be driven on roads, sidewalks or greenways – which matches state laws already in place. The Town Board unanimously adopted the regulation at its Oct. 20 meeting.
However, Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron said the measure may be temporary.
“Whatever the Town Board approves at this time may be an interim step, as Mecklenburg County and the state are considering changes in definitions and allowances,” he said.
Other personal conveyance vehicles (PCVs), such as electric-assisted bikes, scooters and skateboards, are still permitted but must operate at reduced speeds. A full listing of approved regulations is located here.
Herron said enforcement of the golf cart and PCV rule will rely largely on public education.
“While the police will do everything in their power to enforce speed limits and address disruptions caused by PCVs, much will depend on the knowledge and compliance of our citizens,” he said.
Penalties for violating the golf cart rules were not detailed at the meeting. Herron also noted that under state law, the town cannot adopt regulations for golf carts or other PCVs that are stricter than state law. “These restrictions comply with state law,” he said.
