When buying a new appliance, ask a lot of questions concerning extended warranties.

In every situation, the manufacturer usually gives you a one-year warranty or offers a paid service contract that starts on the day you purchase the appliance.

Why should you buy warranty on a product that already has a manufacturer warranty? Service contracts, if sold honestly, should start on the day that your manufacture warranty expires.

I’m not a firm believer in warranties and usually recommend to wait until you’ve had the appliance a year and you’ve had a lot of problems.

A manufacturer’s service contract is still available a year or two later.

If you go a year without any problems, chances are — but not always — they won’t pay for themselves. I’ve actually seen some companies solicit warranties up to five years after you purchase an appliance.

The salesman usually makes the price tempting so be very careful when purchasing extended warranties.
