Schedule set for Exit 28 improvements

In this NCDOT map, I-77 runs across the bottom, left to right, the Post Office is at the left and the car dealership is at the right.

Dec. 4. The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded the construction contract for a series of road improvements that will add multiple roundabouts on the west side of Exit 28. Work is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with completion expected in spring 2028.

This marks the second phase of the “roundabout bookends” designed to ease congestion around Exit 28. It follows the two roundabouts currently under construction north and south of West Catawba Avenue near the Cashion’s and QT gas stations.

The project includes:

• Improvements to the intersection at West Catawba Avenue, Liverpool Parkway and Torrence Chapel Road

• A roundabout at the U.S. Post Office on Liverpool Parkway

• A roundabout in front of the former Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership on Torrence Chapel Road

• A roundabout at Knox Road and Torrence Chapel Road

• Reconstruction of Knox Road

• A pedestrian crossing on Knox Road connecting to the Aldi/Chick-fil-A shopping center

• Improvements to the One Norman Lane intersection
