Recycling: Will you be red or blue?

May 3. Look for a subtle change in when your recycling is picked up, starting June 1, the day after Memorial Day. Waste Pro, the new waste collection contractor, will divide the town into Red and Blue weeks.

Each resident will still get pick-up every other week, however the week will change for half of the town. The change will result in a recycle truck in Cornelius every week.

Once a municipality gets to 10,000 units for collection, having split route is the preferred option for collection. Cornelius had 10,500 units with recycling last week.

For the transition, all of Town’s recycling will be collected the week of May 24th.  The next week of May 31, recycling collection will occur for the blue week (these residents will get recycling collection back to back weeks).  The week of June 7, red week residents will be collected.  Red week residents will see no change.

“We expect some learning curve and Waste Pro will pick up recycling that was set out on the wrong week,” said Tyler Beardsley, assistant town manager.

Waste Pro will be mailing out a calendar to every resident along with a postcard that will notify residents they are a red week or blue.

All collection will be on a 1-day delay following Memorial Day.
