Parks and rec seeks volunteers for board of commissioners

Oct. 16. The Town of Cornelius is seeking residents who are passionate about parks and recreation to volunteer on the Parks and Recreation Board of Commissioners.

The board advises the Town Board of Commissioners on all matters related to parks and recreation, including facility and greenway construction and maintenance, capital improvement projects, summer camps, and partnerships with adult and youth sports organizations. The Parks Department also hosts annual events such as Symphony in the Park, Earth Jam, Laketoberfest and more.

The board has nine members, each nominated to three-year terms, with the option to serve up to two terms (six years total).

“Commissioners play an important role in guiding the future of our parks, greenways, athletic facilities, and programs,” said Parks Director Troy Fitzsimmons. “If you’re ready to lend your voice, share your ideas, and help shape the future of recreation in Cornelius, we’d love to have you.”

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall. Other obligations may include an occasional committee meeting.

The application deadline is Nov. 16, with the first term beginning in February. Interested candidates must submit an application here, participate in an interview with town representatives, and receive final approval from the Town Board of Commissioners, the latter of which is typically a formality.
