Pandemic delays orientation for new Cornelius commissioners

Jan. 5. By Dave Yochum. A course specifically designed to help newly elected officials transition from campaigning to governing has been postponed due to the pandemic.

The UNC Chapel Hill School of Government and the NC League of Municipalities hold a biennial orientation for newly-elected municipal officials called  “Essentials of Municipal Government.”

—Cornelius’ mayor, commissioners and town manager were scheduled to take the course tomorrow and Friday in Asheville.

—Commissioners said the orientation has been postponed until the spring.

Sessions include:

1. The basics of municipal government authority, finances, and functions.

2. Keys to governing body effectiveness and a commissioner’s role as a member.

3. Legal boundaries of ethics and transparency.

4. Developing relationships with colleagues, staff and organizations.

5. Ethics training
