Northern Regional Rec Center may not open until May

North Meck Regional Rec Center on Hwy. 115

March 23. The Northern Region Recreation Center apparently won’t open until May based on a comment made by local officials during the Cornelius Town Board Monday night.

The Mecklenburg County Park Dept. is waiting for final inspections from the State and County on key components of the facility, according to county officials.

Back in July county officials were shooting for a first-quarter opening this year. It was subsequently pushed to late March, mid-April and now sometime in May.

The culprit: COVID-19 supply chain issues impacting the project schedules.

The 85,000 square-foot center, with an indoor track, gyms, exercise equipment, swimming pools and a greenhouse, is part fitness center, part community center, said Mecklenburg County Commissioner Elaine Powell, the North Meck representative on the county board.
