NCDHHS: More than 57,000 new cases statewide in a week

Jan. 14. There are 8,914 new cases of the coronavirus statewide in today’s NC Dept. of Health & Human Services update, down from 9,853 new cases yesterday. There have been more than 57,000 cases in the past week; more than 213,000 in the past month.

From June 1 to July 1 last year there were fewer than 30,000 new cases.

The NCDHHS today also reported 791 new cases in Mecklenburg County.

Yesterday Gov. Cooper opened the coronavirus vaccine to North Carolinians 65 and older.

Hospitalizations

Hospitalizations statewide decreased to 3,916, from a record 3,990 yesterday.

Testing

The statewide positivity rate was 11.2 percent in today’s NCDHHS report. In Mecklenburg County, the positive test rate is 14.5 percent.

Deaths

There were 108 new deaths statewide due to COVID-19 in today’s report for a total of 7,933. Deaths are a lagging indicator of the virus.

Mecklenburg County

There were 10 new deaths due to the coronavirus in Mecklenburg, for a total of 660 since the outbreak began in March. The NCDHHS revised downward by one the total death toll from the coronavirus in Huntersville.

North Mecklenburg

Cornelius: 19 new cases, 1,968 cumulative; 19 deaths total.

Davidson: 15 new cases, 1,014 cumulative; 9 deaths total.

Huntersville: 50 new cases, 3,979 cumulative; 31 deaths total.
