NCDHHS: 6,851 new cases, hospitalizations at 3,940

Jan. 12. The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services today reported 6,851 new cases of the coronavirus today, up 915 cases from yesterday but down from the startling increases that occurred last week. This past Saturday, there were more than 11,000 new cases.

The state is in Phase 1B of vaccinations, meaning seniors age 75 and older are eligible to be vaccinated. You can review the state’s coronavirus data here.

Coronavirus metrics remain high:

Hospitalizations

There were 3,940 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 in today’s report, compared tofewer than 2,000 in the days immediately following Thanksgiving.

Deaths

There were 60 new deaths statewide due to COVID-19 in today’s report for a total of 7,638, an increase of 1,842 since Dec. 12, or 31.8 percent.

Testing

The statewide positivity rate was 14.7 percent in today’s NCDHHS report. It was over 16-17 percent on Tuesday and Wednesday last week.

Mecklenburg County

There were 791 new cases county-wide in today’s report, up from 740 yesterday. There have been 17 new deaths due to the coronavirus in Mecklenburg, up 56 in the past week.

North Mecklenburg

Cornelius: 23 new cases, 1,895 cumulative; 19 deaths total.

Davidson: 4 new cases, 977 cumulative; 9 deaths total.

Huntersville: 48 new cases, 3,829 cumulative; 32 deaths total.
