NCDHHS: 2nd day of more than 10,000 new coronavirus cases

Jan. 8. The number of new COVID-19 cases statewide surpassed the 10,000 level for a second day.

The NC Dept. of Health & Human Services reported 10,028 new cases today, down from 10,398 yesterday. Cornelius alone had 32 new cases, according to the NCDHHS. To review the data, click here.

Hospitalizations

Total hospitalized stayed the same two days in a row: 3,960, according to NCDHHS.

Deaths

There were 115 new deaths statewide due to COVID-19 in today’s report. North Carolina has seen a total of 7,328 deaths due to the coronavirus. Since Dec. 8, before the impact of the Thanksgiving travel was felt, there have been 1,723 deaths statewide related to COVID-19

Testing

The statewide positivity rate was 13.9 percent, up from 13.5 percent yesterday, but down from 17.8 percent Wednesday. The statewide goal is 5 percent. During the week before Christmas, it ranged between 10.5 percent and 11 percent.

Mecklenburg County

There were 946 new cases reported by NDHHS in Mecklenburg.

The county’s positivity rate was 14.5 percent in today’s report.

There have been 607 deaths due to the coronavirus, up six from yesterday, and up 131 from Dec. 8.

North Mecklenburg

Cornelius: 32 new cases, 1,794 cumulative; 19 deaths total.

Davidson: 14 new cases, 931 cumulative; 9 deaths total.

Huntersville: 44 new cases, 3,608 cumulative; 32 deaths total.
