National Bike to School Day to be celebrated locally and nationwide

May 2. Wednesday is National Bike to School Day and students at J.V. Washam Elementary and Cornelius Elementary will join Cornelius Police to participate.

Pupils from across the country will join local police departments in this celebration.

Cornelius students will bike/walk to school from one of the starting locations with their own bike and  helmet.

Each school will have a different starting location and start time:

J.V. Washam Elementary will meet at Waterman Fish Bar on Bailey Road at 7 am, departing at 7:15 am.

– Cornelius Elementary will meet at Smithville Park on South Ferry Street at 8 am, departing at 8:15 am.

Students will have the opportunity to meet with Cornelius Officers, learn about bicycle safety, and be able to ride with the Cornelius Bike Patrol Officers.

Davidson

Parents can contact their child’s school to see what is being planned. Volunteers are needed to make this a fun and safe event; details.

Lake Norman Bike Expo is Saturday, May 6

The Lake Norman Bike Expo will be held 10 am – noon Saturday, May 6 on the Davidson town green. Area bike shops will have bikes to demo, including Pedego e-bike shop (and rentals), and advocacy nonprofit groups will be in attendance.

Town of Cornelius staff will share information about their Heads Up safety campaign and greenway maps. Town of Davidson police and staff will share greenway maps and Vision Zero program information.

Join the guided greenway ride (10 miles) starting at 10:30 am. Anyone age 14 -17 must be accompanied by an adult. Bring the whole family for the Family Bike Ride at 11  am. The event is free.
