Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances

Jan. 11. Mecklenburg County government, Cornelius Town Hall, Davidson Town Hall and Huntersville Town Hall will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but Davidson is holding a special celebration at 10 am in the Town Hall & Community Center.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Hilary Green, James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies at Davidson College.

The theme is “It Starts with Me – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion—Actualizing the Dream.” Music will begin at 9:30 am in the auditorium.

Garbage pick-up will not be interrupted in Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville.

Unity in Community observances on Sunday

Unity in Community North Mecklenburg, Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church and Davidson Presbyterian Church will hold a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration Jan. 14 that honors Nannie Houston Potts as the first and only Black mayor of Cornelius.

The event, which starts at 1 pm with a community dinner, features food, music, and speakers.

The event is free but donations toward Torrence Chapel AME Zion Church’s education committee college scholarships are welcomed.

Jan. 15 is also a National Day of Service. People everywhere can honor Dr. King’s legacy by volunteering.
