The Lake Norman Marine Commission is looking to hire its first executive director.

The commission, created under North Carolina law in 2025, manages boating safety and permit enforcement, oversees operations and budgets, leads public education programs, implements environmental initiatives such as invasive species management, maintains compliance with state laws, and coordinates emergency responses.

The part-time executive director will work 20 hours per week for $25 per hour and serve as the commission’s chief administrative officer, reporting directly to the board. Responsibilities include implementing commission policies, overseeing daily operations, managing budgets and contracts, supervising staff, and coordinating monthly meetings and committees.

The director will also lead boating safety and public education programs, manage communications, and act as the commission’s spokesperson. Regulatory duties include supporting rule making, coordinating enforcement, and collaborating with agencies such as the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Candidates should have at least five years of senior leadership experience, knowledge of state public sector or environmental regulations, and residency in one of the four member counties.

The commission is governed by a nine-member board representing Mecklenburg, Iredell, Lincoln and Catawba counties.
