Letter to Cornelius Today: Think about others
April 2. I wanted to let you know about a conversation I recently had with my friend who is truly staying at home with her family, being responsible not just for her family but for her community and her country.
Her son is being contacted by his school friends to get out of the house, hang out and take a ride on their jet skies…all of which is approved by their parents. Social distancing seemingly does not apply to them nor does staying at home.
There is not only a health crisis in this community as well as this country and world…there is a crisis of taking responsibility, a lack of concern, a disregard and disrespect of others as demonstrated by egotistical and privileged non-caring parents and their children with attitudes and actions as noted above.
To these parents and children, please, for just one millisecond, think about someone else besides yourself and how YOU can keep others safe and healthy.
Think about the frontline of medical personnel at hospitals and doctor offices, support personnel at these places, EMTs, law enforcement personnel, grocery store workers, those working at pharmacies, truck drivers who are driving and delivering everyday…the list can go on and on of all of the people who are faithfully keeping us safe, healthy, strong and fed.

This is the type of behavior I see every day when walking my dogs. It’s not just the product of poor parenting. It is the attitude of parents who insist on ignoring the facts and persist diminishing the seriousness of the pandemic. The problem begins with the adults even in my own neighborhood, and simply is mirrored in the behavior of the young.
