May 12. The Cornelius Police Department along with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation hosted the first Lake Norman Boat Safety Media Day held at the Joshua Murray Boating Safety Center at Blythe Landing. The safety center opened in May 2025 with the purpose of educating the public on water safety and to serve as a training center prototype for water safety experts statewide.

Brinzey

Lake Norman boating season is approaching and Blythe Landing is the busiest dock for commercial crowds. According to Corporal George Brinzey of the Cornelius Lake Patrol most accidents occur from “inexperience and lack of situational awareness.”

“If one person walks in here and walks away with something they didn’t know prior to, then we’ve done our job,” Brinzey said.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is available to perform a free vessel safety inspections by appointment at the safety center. They also teach two different levels of classes on boating safety beginning on May 17. More details here.

  1. Capt. Andy Called it some 4 years ago. Now finally the folks in Raliegh get it and seem to be paying attention.

Let the state of NC move forward with new boating legislation that is fair, common sense, and helpful for all in EVERY COUNTY OF NORTH CAROLINA!!!

    Thank YOU, CAPT. ANDY!!!
