July 24 is officially ‘Big Day at the Lake Day’

July 7. By Dave Vieser. Mayor Woody Washam and the Town Board have officially proclaimed Saturday July 24 as Big Day at the Lake in Cornelius. The official proclamation adopted on July 6 said “Big Day at the Lake provides a day of fun for at-risk youngsters in Big Brothers and Big Sisters…and that Cornelius citizens and businesses participating in Big Day at the Lake this year will celebrate 17 years of service.”

Most of the children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters have never had the opportunity to come to Lake Norman for boating.

This year there is no picnic at the Energy Explorium, which remains closed to the public due to the pandemic.

Fundraising

The event has resonated with individuals and corporations over the years, with more than $1.75 million in sponsorships and donations being sent to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas.

About $100,000 in donations have been received or pledged this year, all going straight to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Big Day at the Lake has virtually no overhead, thanks to individual Boat Hosts, and in-kind donations.
