Items of interest at tonight’s town board meeting

By Dave Vieser

Aug. 17. A replacement cell phone tower in the Jetton Cove neighborhood, which would be 84 feet higher than the existing structure, has been proposed by Florida-based PeakNet, which operates the system.

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for Monday August 17, during the regular Town Board meeting.

“PeakNet seeks to rezone and replace the current 115’ concealed antenna tower with a 199-foot standard monopole tower on property located at 19328 Lake Norman Cove Drive,” said Town Planner Aaron Tucker.  “The new tower will be located in the same location as the current tower.”

PeakNet claims the new tower will provide  wider coverage area for carriers than the existing tower.

This would be the first of two public hearings on the request required by town law.

Also at Mondays’ meeting, the commissioners will hold a hearing on a request by Mt. Zion Senior Housing, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and NC Homes Associates to voluntarily annex 15.31 acres of property located to the east of N.C. Highway 115  and to the southeast of Zion Avenue.

The meeting, which begins 7 pm in Town Hall, will be streamed via the town’s website: www.cornelius.org. Those wishing to attend and speak in person will be subject to the usual COVID-19 screening and temperature checks.
