Hough faces Millbrook in 8A state championship game

Dec. 11. By Ryan Moxon. Hough travels to Chapel Hill tonight to face Millbrook in the school’s first-ever state championship football game.

The 13-0 Huskies will meet a 13-0 Millbrook team from Raleigh with similar strengths on both sides of the ball and numerous high-profile college recruits. Both teams boast large, physical lines and stifling secondaries that have dominated all season. Millbrook has allowed fewer than six points per game defensively, while Hough has surrendered fewer than seven.

Hough’s defense will be tested by a balanced Millbrook offense that features a two-headed running attack with senior Brilison McCullers and junior Santonis Wright. In the passing game, senior wide receivers Malachi Gilchrist and Malachi Thomas provide big-play threats for junior quarterback Bryson Gray, who has thrown 24 touchdown passes this season.

Offensively, Hough will look to stand on the shoulders of junior quarterback Ethan Royal, a breakout performer this season who is averaging 160 passing yards, two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown per game. Sophomore Jamari Morrison anchors the running game, while the offense will look to seniors Tyran Evans and Jayden White to generate explosive plays through the air.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Kenan Memorial Stadium on the University of North Carolina campus. Tickets cost $20 through GoFan, and the game will be streamed live on the NFHS Network. Hough is also offering students a ticket and bus transportation package for $53.

Watch party

Torrence & Knox located in Shops on the Green is holding a state championship watch party with the game live streamed on TVs. Entry is free and food and drink specials will be offered.
