HAWK signal to go live tomorrow

A screen shot from a HAWK Crosswalk System video

Dec. 20. By Dave Vieser. Barring last-minute problems, the HAWK signal on Westmorland Road will be activated at noon Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The High Intensity Activated Crosswalk signal will be the first outside of Charlotte in Mecklenburg County.

When it is activated, and a pedestrian pushes the walk button, the stop lights will be illuminated and drivers must stop.

The signal is designed to provide plenty of time for walkers and cyclists wishing to cross the road.

The bright lights will be clearly visible to motorists.

The Cornelius Police will continue to monitor traffic at the site once the system is turned on.
