June 19. Today is a federal holiday marking the day in 1865 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they had been freed — after the end of the Civil War, and two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Ada Jenkins Center is holding its fifth Annual Juneteenth Celebration at 6 pm.
This year’s event will have a new look and a more intentional focus on educating attendees on the history and importance of the African American neighborhoods in Lake Norman.
