Governor calls for mandatory coastal evacuation

Sept. 3. With powerful and dangerous wind, rain and flooding anticipated from Hurricane Dorian, Gov. Cooper has issued a mandatory evacuation order for barrier islands along the entire coast, effective at 8 am on Wednesday.

Where local authorities have called for earlier evacuations, visitors and residents should follow those directions.

“Please listen to and follow all evacuation orders,” Gov. Cooper said. “We have seen the life and death effects of this storm in the Bahamas, and we urge everyone on the islands at the coast to leave.”

The storm is expected to affect eastern North Carolina later this week, but much of the state will see Dorian’s effects in the form of rain and possible flooding.

North Mecklenburg has a 20 percent chance of showers on and off Thursday, with a high near 82. Friday will be sunny and hot, with a high near 87, according to the National Weather Service.
