Girl Scouts canned food drive Oct. 14

Girl Scout Troops in Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson will go door to door Saturday, Oct. 14 to collect canned goods for Loaves & Fishes.  The girls are hoping neighbors will donate “A Can if You Can” to help feed the hungry in their communities.

Residents are also encouraged to drop off food donations at the Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble Street in Davidson, between 9 am and 2:30 pm where Girl Scouts will be on hand to collect food donations.

The girls have a goal of collecting 14,000 lbs of food this year in continued support for this great cause. During last year’s drive, the girls braved torrential downpours due to Hurricane Matthew to collect 13,000 lbs of food. Priority needs include canned meat, canned fruit, canned pastas, 100 percent juice and cereal.

Food collected will be used to fill the Loaves & Fishes food pantries located at the Ada Jenkins Center and Huntersville United Methodist Church.

Loaves & Fishes is a nonprofit emergency food pantry program that provides a week’s worth of nutritionally balanced groceries at no cost to individuals and families in Mecklenburg County who are experiencing a short term crisis.  Loaves & Fishes operates a network of 24 pantries throughout Mecklenburg County.
