The Cornelius Police Department has launched “Operation Safe Lake,” a summer safety campaign aimed at promoting safe and responsible recreation on Lake Norman. The campaign’s slogan is “Safe Summers Start Here.”

With thousands of residents and visitors expected to use the lake during the summer months, police officials said the initiative is designed to help prevent accidents and injuries through public education and community outreach.

The campaign will include safety-tip videos, community meetings, public awareness messages and educational materials focused on boating and water safety.

Officials said the campaign will emphasize several key safety practices, including wearing life jackets, avoiding impaired boating, monitoring weather conditions, remaining alert in shallow water and closely supervising children near the water.

The department is encouraging boaters, swimmers and other lake users to make safety a priority and remain aware of their surroundings while enjoying Lake Norman, especially with the lower water levels, which have exposed shoals and rocks in high traffic areas.
