COVID update: Aug. 17

Aug. 17. With a third dose of COVID vaccines soon to become standard procedure for coronavirus protection, the NC Dept. of Health and Human Services today reported 3,575 new cases of COVID-19 statewide, and 2,828 related hospitalizations.

Hospitalizations statewide are about double levels at the beginning of August; on Aug. 2, 1,359 North Carolinians were hospitalized due to COVID.

NC deaths

The NCDHHS today reported 15 new coronavirus deaths statewide.

Testing

Positive tests are coming back at the rate of 13.5 percent statewide; 5 percent and under is the goal

Mecklenburg

In Mecklenburg County, there were 424 new cases from Monday to today, but no new COVID deaths. The county-wide positive test rate remained at 12.6 percent.

North Mecklenburg (change from Monday)

Cornelius: 9 new cases, 3,244 cumulative total, 26 deaths total.

Davidson: 7 new cases, 1,894 cumulative total, 15 deaths total.

Huntersville: 32 new cases, 6,938 cumulative total, 55 deaths total.
