Cornelius residents gather to celebrate MLK Jr.
Jan. 19 – Hundreds gathered in Cornelius on Monday afternoon for a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The festivities at the Cain Center for the Arts included a welcome from journalist Tonya Rivens, a Cornelius native, and comments from the Rev. Dr. Aaron Moore of Bethel Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Marlowe of Mt. Zion UMC, and Cornelius Mayor Denis Bilodeau.
The keynote speaker was Brian Wofford, president of Atrium Health Lake Norman, who spoke about the importance of working toward the future, referencing King’s fourth and final book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?
The Queen City Jazz Group performed Lift Every Voice and Sing to open the program, which included dance performances by The Place Church Worship Dance Ministry.
